With Google’s Oct 4th product announcements some 14 days out, we have leaked product specs for the alleged second generation Pixel phone, Home Mini, PixelBook Chromebook, and updated Daydream VR headset from Droid life.
Pixel 2 XL
It appears there will be three colors; “kinda blue”, “just black”, and “clearly white”. Early speculation identifies a 64GB and 128GB model priced at $849 and $949 respectively. A little pricy when compared to the Midnight Black 64GB unlocked Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus priced at $825 and is only a $150 discount to the new 64 GB iPhone X. It is assumed the Pixel 2 XL will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 like many other premium smartphones introduced this year.
The leaked photo on the left does not show the front so we will have to wait and see how Google handles bezels but the consensus is the design will be close to the render on the right. The camera cutouts remind me more of the Nexus 6 Plus than the Pixel XL.
Hello to Google’s $49 response to the Amazon Dot. Like the Dot, the high quality speakers are gone as well as the interchangeable covers. Colors options include coral, charcoal (black), and chalk (white/silver). It’s a given these units will be tightly integrated with Google Assistant.
Anticipated features include:
- Hands-free, Google Assistant
- Hands-free, voice-controlled devices (ie. Chromecast TV)
- Calling and messaging
- Clusters of multiple Home units
Ok, this is a luxury item. Rumored to be powered by high end Intel processors and allegedly available with 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB of local storage, the leaked price is $1,199, $1,399, and $1,749 respectively. The entry price is roughly twice the going rate for current premium Chromebooks. Although it supports a stylus, it will not be included in the box and the stylus will cost an additional $99. I suspect the build quality of the original Pixel will be brought forward and there will be app introductions to showcase these features and in support of the price.
Rumored anticipated features include:
- Convertible form factor
- 2400×1600, 3:2 display (ie. Samsung Chromebook Plus/Pro)
- Kaby Lake processors
- Faster NVMe SSD
- Fingerprint scanner (not visible in photo?)
- Wacom Stylus/digitizer
- Google Assistant key
- Double-tap to check battery (ie. discontinued Chromebook Pixel)
- Back-lit keyboard
It may be a coincident, but Microsoft has a Laptop named the “Surface Book”. This is how they describe their product.
The ultimate laptop! Incredibly powerful and meticulously crafted, Surface Book is a revolution in laptop design. The detachable 13.5“ PixelSense Display is optimized for Pen and touch and has higher resolution than MacBook Pro 13”.1 With the full power of a high performance laptop and the versatility of a tablet, Surface Book gives you everything you need to work with professional-grade software, anywhere you want.
Daydream VR headset
Very few details about the new Daydream VR headset are available other than it will cost $99 and uses a nylon-like material rather than the cloth-like finish found on the original model.
Certainly some surprises here. We may see additional leaks prior to the fourth as keeping a lid on product details is very difficult. I will update this page as new information becomes available.
